چکیده

In the Internet, multimedia services, such as video streaming, TV conference, should be supported by multicast communications, i.e. IP multicast, in order to reduce total bandwidth necessary for distributing streaming programs. Below data-link layer, IP can use any network technology and ATM is the most promising one for a backbone network. IP multicast is based on the connection-less communication and ATM on the connection-oriented communication. In order to integrate these two opposite-side network architectures, IP multicast over ATM is proposed in IETF. For implementing this technology, two VC configuration methods are proposed; the mesh method and the server method. In this paper, we propose a multi-VC server method which is based on the server method. In the server method, Head-Of-the-Line-like blocking of ATM Adaptation Layer Service Data Unit (AAL SDU) at the multicast server degrades throughput performance. It is because the multicast server is admitted to set up only one VC per multicast group for data transmission and ATM cells fragmented from the same AAL SDU should be transmitted in serial without mixing other cells. The multi-VC server method solves this problem by setting up multiple VCs from the server. Multiple VCs enable the server to transmit data cells from different senders in parallel. By simulation results, we discuss the merit of this method.

VC consumption in the MARS architecture for IP Multicast over ATM

The Multicast Address Resolution Architecture (MARS, [GA96]) has been accepted by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) as the solution for using IP multicast over ATM networks. This architecture is based on a client/server model. The MARS server maintains mappings between IP multicast addresses and the corresponding set of ATM addresses of hosts that are members of the IP group. This is p...

Multicast Server Architectures for MARS-based ATM multicasting

A mechanism to support the multicast needs of layer 3 protocols in general, and IP in particular, over UNI 3.0/3.1 based ATM networks has been described in RFC 2022. Two basic approaches exist for the intra-subnet (intra-cluster) multicasting of IP packets. One makes use of a mesh of point to multipoint VCs (the ’VC Mesh’ approach), while the other uses a shared point to multipoint tree rooted ...

Seam: Scalable and Eecient Atm Multicast

This paper proposes a multipoint-to-multipoint mul-ticast architecture for ATM networks. The necessity for such an architecture stems from the scalability requirements , both in terms of state to be maintained in the network and in terms of the group population dynamics, of a wide range of networking applications. We argue that approaches of using multicast servers or meshes of point-to-multipo...

Multicast server architectures for supporting IP multicast over ATM

The Multicast Address Resolution Server protocol has been proposed as a mechanism for supporting IP multicast over ATM networks. Two basic techniques exist for the intra-subnet multicasting of IP packets over ATM networks. Both the approaches are based on the use of a Multicast Address Resolution Server (MARS). One approach makes use of a mesh of point-to-multipoint Virtual Circuits (VC Mesh) e...
